MODA and The Gardens latest collaboration ,2201 Fashion Avenue on the second floor is an effort to be proud of. Featuring 24 designers from the likes of Donna Chew, Lester Lim, Amanda Brown, Khoon Hooi, Von Jolly, Nazleen Noor, William Liew, Jonathan Cheng, thirty four (leather goods), Doreen Tang (accessories) and the rest which you will just have to check out!!

Nice big area all of 2000 sq.feet dedicated to promoting Malaysian designers, the launch on December 4th saw a good turnout of who's who of Kuala Lumpur. Emceed by former Miss Malaysia Chermaine Poo, it was all about great clothes and a great party. 2201 is to be the "training ground' for these labels as put forth by Gillian Hung (image consultant and MODA president) who turned out in a pair of sequin shorts (Chanel perhaps) and curls....

So , don't waste time , go shopping...prices aren't shockingly expensive...I would say great value for money. Prices start from RM100 and I daresay is an absolute steal because each piece comes coupled with each designers dream and hard work.... so support Malaysian Fashion.

Last week,I was fortunate to be invited to the launch of Puteri Ledang's new product range launch at The Loft at Avenue K. We were treated to a hand treatment and also a demonstration of the the body scrub and traditional herbal heat treatment made exactly the same way as the traditional urut ladies of yester years using ginger and other herbs. All beautifully demonstrated on two male models.

My favorite of the new luxurious take home spa range, of body mask and body scrub had to be the Citronelia range's body scrub and body mask. Soft gel like scrub to relax and scrub off dead cells in the refreshing citron scent and then to mask for a ten to twenty minute whilst you relax.

The whole idea of the body scrub and body is to pamper and take care of the hands , the decolletage and the neck, much neglected areas in most of our daily beauty regime. Yes these are the parts that constantly betray our age and lack of care as they are subjected to quite a lot of wear and tear.

Well, maybe it's the fact that she's got glowing, tan skin and row of sparking white teeth.
Or maybe it's because she has a trim and toned body which many of us yearn for.
Or maybe it's simply because she's wearing that hot trend of the season--shorts. With killer heels too!

Yes, maybe we can't all have flat abs and firm arms like Desperate Housewives' Gabrielle, but what we all can do is pull off this look with ease.

Shorts are making waves now, despite many people still considering these cropped darlings inappropriate to be worn anywhere else except to bed or picnics.

But worn right, nobody would look at you in distaste.

Simple cuts in basic colours are the best bet you can get, simply because they are versatile and easy to match. However, simple doesn't have to be boring, so do look out for cute details like the high-waist, gold button ones on this darling from Dorothy Perkins.

Checks, plaid or tweed are very big trends this season, because they give a vintage look with a modern twist. These are from Forever 21.

Shorts are like jeans, one of the basics in your wardrobe. That translates to: easy to match!
You can pair them with literally anything, but just like any piece of clothing, there are some general dos and don'ts.

1. Look for the right cut and right fit.
They should be "shorts", not "short shorts". No matter how sexy your derriere is, there is really no excuse for showing buttcheeks or buttcracks. Also, avoid shorts which bunch up at the crotch, as these make you look fuller in the middle. Your shorts should also not hang too loose, or you risk looking like a G.I. Jane.

2. Moderation is always the key.
If you are already wearing shorts, balance out the rest of your outfit appropriately. Wearing so little on your bottom and even less on your top will just make you scantily clad, not a sexy goddess. Unless you're going for an outing in the park under the hot, hot sun, try to avoid revealing tops like spaghetti straps or tube tops with your shorts, especially in more formal places like college.
A very good look for shorts is to pair them with a loose, billowing blouse, like a puff-sleeved tunic.

3. Wear appropriate footwear.
Heels or wedges with shorts not only makes you have sexy, endless legs, it also helps to tone down the casualness of your outfit. Pumps are a cute option as well. Flipflops with shorts just scream "going to the market".

4. Play up your shorts.
Mix and match with additional pieces like vests, necklaces or belts. They will just up your stylish factor.

5. Wear them to the right places.

Never, ever, ever wear shorts to serious places like work, a formal function and such. Shorts are meant to add to your playful factor, and you most certainly do not want to be seen as playful at work.

If you steer away from shorts in public because you are not keen on flashing your legs, bear in mind that generally, your legs (especially the calves and ankles) are one of the more toned parts of your body, not to mention slimmest at the ankles, because all your body weight rests on your legs, thus giving it more workout.

But if you're still not convinced, try this: pair your shorts with leggings or tights underneath. This combo not only helps to hide your bits, it is also effortlessly chic!

Checked out Trucco at Bangsar Village II and newly opened Pavillion. A brand of Spanish origin, it is fun and stylish. They opened with their Autumn Winter 2007 range which consisted of strong colours like ochre and mustard, olive green tops and loads of skirts in jacquard material. Their look is all about layering either from their mix and match of soft printed shirts with their knit tops or wear the new look of a knit top sewn on to a shirt. This brand carries a range that can move from casual smart to casual. The price range for skirts are RM250 and up and tops RM103 and up. At teh time of our visit , a lot of pieces had not come in yet. But they were expecting arrivals every two weeks.

As we know , this fall we all get to emphasize our femininity with some boyish attire. And one of the easiest way to get this look is by having a three piece affair. Ie team up a vest with your favorite pants or shorts. There are all kinds of cut out there in the market , brands like Zara and MNG carry quite a wide range. They are priced at between RM159-RM169 and usually in black or white or houndstooth. My favorite would be this boxy piece by Donna C at RM190. It is cut halter at the back thereby emphasizing the waistline. Worn with straight slim pants or shorts and with a slightly fitted shirt or just a plain white tshirt. It is a sure winner!

On the way to work this morning, I tuned in to the Mix.FM channel as is my usual habit and heard their new program which is sponsored by Nivea. This new program allows listeners to write in about someone that they fancy and the team of Serena C , Ika and Pietro will help set them up with the guy or gal that they fancy! Sounds interesting enough when I first heard the ads on the radio. So this morning , a caller named Hannah called up and requested the team to help fix her up with a colleague and friend named Mike, whom she hangs out and talks a lot with and apparently shared enough such that she thinks that they are compatible when vetted by Pietro. She just had not had the guts to tell him how she feels about him or to ask him out on a date.

So the Mix team called up Mike and asks him if he will agree to dinner for two with Hannah paid for by Nivea and Mike agreed. Then they revelead to Mike the actual theme of the program and asked him again if he is willing to go and after the slightest (barely perceptible, really) unless you are a sharp cynic like me, he said yes, of course! Very manly, Mikey.

Now my question is this, what was poor Mike suppose to do, a bit of a catch 22 here, if he said no , his dear friend and colleague will be publicly humiliated with all of Mix.Fm listeners. So, he is a clever chappy , this Mike , he says yes, gets called gallant, gets a free dinner date (a date is not any kind of "commitment") , have loads of fun and enjoy dinner with his good friend and can still let his good friend down gently....but better yet, he gave himself the option to discover true love!

But....my questions is this , will you dare let a radio show set you up?
What are the chances of success or will it backfire big time?

A Li Yaa Restaurant and Bar

If you are into experiencing the different types of food of this world , then head out to the A Li Yaa Restaurant, situated at Lorong Dungun , Damansara Heights. This restaurant that opened some two months back serve Sri Lankan dishes. It sees regular clienteles of the Sri Lankan and Indian community and for anyone else who wish to try out their famed Sri Lankan crabs. Unfortunately when we were there , we missed the crabs by two minutes (at least that was what the waitress told us, sold out). It was a Friday night and only 8.45pm but it was a packed house.

Love the ambience and decor, reminded me of colonial mansions in India and Sri Lanka, all whitewashed with an open verandah. Leather like highback chairs and dark wooden tables gives the place a very masculine and country club feel. Not to mention the big garden outside (really great for a garden party), unfortunately the sports bar upstairs was closed for a private function... so did not get to check it out.

Now as for my first foray into Sri Lankan food, I am a little undecided. Melati and I decided to share and ordered the lamb cutlets , the string hopper kothu (spaghetti stir fried with seafood) and lumprice ( kind of like 'nasi lemak" which is red rice served with spicy condiments and chicken). We found that the food was a bit too spicy and salty and were told later that this is how Sri Lankans and even their Malay customers like it , we could have asked the kitchen to reduce the spiciness and saltiness (well, should have told us before, but maybe they thought we look kinda "hot" and can take the "heat")

Our verdit (and we beg your pardon if we sound just a tad uncultured and insensitive to another culture's cuisine). Here goes, the lamb cutlet for starters was actually good,if one overlooks the over spiciness. The "lumprice" , a house favorite was only so-so. The string hoppers "kothu" tasted quite delicious in spite of the saltiness, kind of like "mee hoon goreng" with a different kind of zing. Then we decided to share dessert and went for the " vaddilapam" , which is a kind of sponge cake soaked in caramel. Even though we were forwarned that it is quite sweet we were still unprepared for the extent of it...in the end we ate the cake by dipping it in our coffee...quite yummy actually! Then entire bill including coffee and drinks came up to RM82.00.

Have decided that I need to go back again one day and taste the Sri Lankan crabs to give the restaurant it's due credit. By the way, A Li Yaa, means elephant in sanskrit and the owner of the restaurant is a strong supporter of the conservation of elephants, I read thie in theri previous press write ups.. My computer is jammed up and I am rushing off, pls come read this page again to get visual of the food!!

Aseana CafeBar

This weekend if you are heading down to KLCC , do check out the Aseana CafeBar, it is chic and serve really delicious mixture of local and western delights. A personal favorite is the "rojak buah" (mixture of local fruits with prawn paste) and the really wicked Caesar salad.The portions are big and they don't come cheap but well worth the price and the value. The no fuss layout that is simple and chic is also a plus point . For a people watcher like me , it is also fun to sit and observe the comings and goings either into KLCC from the adjoining Mandarin Oriental Hotel or savvy shoppers and more than one or two fashionistas with shopping bags in tow and who might just drop in to the same cafe to rest their well shod feet after a shopping expedition to the array of boutiques like IT (that carries a mixture of 2nd line designer brands like Just Cavalli and many more), Cole Haan ,Furla, Christian Lacroix and many more. It is definitely a highly recommend girls get-together place anytime- from lunch all the way to tea time.

The story of a brinjal and a cucumber

Ever since yesterday, I have been having a really sick feeling in my stomach...it is more than a little depressing to hear of yet another child tortured and murdered. It is even more disturbing to eventually realise what a painful and cruel death it was. Her final moments can only be excruciating and may God have mercy on her and I really hope for her sake she was unconscious throughout the ordeal of which no one yet knows the length of . Reminded me of the late Ang Lee Hong case some 30 years ago, where a child suffered the same fate. That case shocked Malaysians in the extent of its cruelty and this case is no less scary.
Some details escapes me, but a fenale child similar in age between 8 to 9 years old was found murdered and had her abdominals ruptured by wood block forcefully pushed into her vagina. In this recent case a brinjal and a cucumber was inserted inside her vagina and according to some newspaper a tomato was found inside her ruptured intestine. Cause of death ruptured intestine and excessive bleeding. How these girls got into the hands of these sick people we will never know, maybe it was the case of wrong place wrong time. May God Bless both their souls!

emmagem.com has always been about good things in life but I think that we need to take a moment of silence and pray for this poor souls and pray for the sick and demented , so that they will please stop hurting the little children. Far be it for us to understand the perpetrators' minds , and we have every right to demand that they be brought to justice as soon as possible and be properly persecuted.

But let each of us today be mindful of what is good and bad, right and wrong so that we in our own little way keep those in our arms safe and happy. It starts with one and let us each do our part and make this world a better place.

Kiss for Lunch

Yea, how else can you make your daily routine exciting! Try out lunch at Bisou (means "kiss; if you will parlez francais , pardon my French).

Decided to catch up with my old friend, Chui after a long spell of very busy schedule and cancelled appointments, and since her office is on Jalan Sultan Ismail, best course of action ( takes like 10 minutes in KL traffic to get to Bisou, on Heritage Row), so away to Bisou, we went. Also I'd been meaning to check out their lunch menu and wanted to introduce this lovely cafe/restaurant to Chui , who also loves good food.

Chui ordered the chicken pie and asked for more vegetables instead of mash which the waiter mistakenly thought she wanted an extra order of salad , so caused a very hungry Chui to be just a tad annoyed coz it took two trips for the chicken pie back into the kitchen before she got her additional vegetables of peas and the kitchen just cudn't bear to let Chui have the pie without any mash and served half the mash on top of the additional vegetables at no charge...so "peas" all round.

Meanwhile, I ordered the smoked salmon bagel and it is really delicious...it's really difficult to get good bagels in Kuala Lumpur, most bagels tend to taste like bread, but the bagel at Bisou is springy just as bagels should be(think New York bagels). A very generous topping of creme cheese brings out the subtle flavor of the salmon and the bagel and makes a delightfully filling lunch with all the nutritions as the accomnpanying salad with vinaigrette dressing balances the heaviness of the cream cheese. Finished the meal off with some coffex cafe latte and and we were two happy campers.

Note:There is loads of parking space right next to Bijou, open car park.Would advise that you come in from Jalan Sultan Ismail and not from Jalan Dang Wangi especialy on Fridays to avoid the jams especially this Ramadhan month!

Hairspray 2007

Finally, the much anticipated musical of the year is now out in the cinemas!

When a friend of mine, a HUGE John Travolta fan, told me she wanted to watch this movie, i agreed simply because i love watching movies at the cinema. But i have to say, i was not really expecting much (maybe also because of the lack of publicity in Australia).

However, when the first scene came, i knew it was going to be a fantastic movie. As a musical freak, Nicky Blonsky's vocal ability blew me away! Her voice is so beautiful and i think people should stop focusing on her weight and more on how successful she can be. And speaking of that, the musical touches on two issues that i am strongly against: discrimination of fat people and discrimination of dark-skinned people.

One song that really touched me was "I Know Where I've Been" sung by Queen Latifah. To know that some of us out there are trying to change the world for the better (one simple step at a time), is a wonderful thought. But also listen up for all the other songs which i think are rather nice too.

I assume that everyone should know by now that John Travolta plays the character of a woman in the movie and while some think it's disgraceful, without his character, the movie would be boring. His character kept me laughing throughout the entire movie! But oh, i am also happy that there is not really much focus on Zac Efron because i think he is rather overrated but hey, i cannot deny that he's a good dancer and singer.

So go and catch Hairspray at your nearest cinemas now! It's such a happy movie that you simply must watch it! =)

P.S - James Marsden is so hot!

I have to admit that i do get rather tired or watching Bollywood films sometimes what with the similar concept of music, dance and violence. But if there is one Bollywood production that you have to watch, it would have to be Water by Deepa Mehta.

Firstly, you will notice that this movie has no song sequences where you find the cast dancing and singing. Besides the absense of that concept, the whole story line is very different from your usual Indiam film hence setting it apart from the others.

Water is a film focusing on the lives of the widows in the 1930s, when misinterpreted Hindu beliefs forced widows (one of them is a 9 year old girl) to live in a widows' house, shunned by the community. It takes you on a journey, exposing you to the perils that these widows were put through (and sadly, some are STILL being mistreated in similar ways) and questions certain controversial issues.

Because of its controversial nature, it sparked protests from Indians and the shooting of this film was postponed for a few years. However, Water is is no way condemning Hinduism. It merely speaks of certain unlawful Brahmins of those times who used the Holy Scriptures for their personal gains.

It's an eye-opener!

True Malaysian Spirit!

Okay, Merdeka Day was a whole weekend ago and I was supposed to write about my 'fireworks" experience but hey, I'd been down with a flu bug...if I miss my spinning classes , it's usually serious..but enough about me.

So how did the international fireworks show in Putrajaya go...from very far away and inside the comforts of Shang-Ri La Putrajaya's coffee lounge, quietly brilliant! But what was truly amazing and I feel I need to express my sincere gratitude for the "Malaysia Boleh" attitude, was the hotel lounge's manager's willingness to personally carry two chairs and a lounge table for my friend and I and despite confessing his frustrations at being short staffed, served us food (very good mee goreng by the way) where all the kitchens in the hotel except one were closed and cooks disappearing to celebrate Merdeka, it was 2330 after all when we finally got there, count down to Merdeka 50 years!

Customers were still pouring into the hotel and very hungry ones like yours truly, who had braved traffic jams from Kuala Lumpur since 7pm and missing dinner time and this hotel happened to be the nearest around main square of Putrajaya where a huge jam leading to the Convention Center where the "action" is had been building up since 9pm where we hiked up the hill and actually mistook the bright lights of the Istana Melawati as the beckoning lights of our own shang ri la.

To be told that the fastest food available is mee goreng and nasi lemak , will be just a mere forty minutes wait was unbelievably comforting, because we felt what it must be like during wartimes and we were trapped in a building with no food and no idea when if any will arrive .

But I was a proud Malaysian that night. You know Malaysians are truly patriotic when they are willing to brave traffic jams just to watch fireworks display (of international standards of course), bring family , young and old and stand in the face of chilly winds of Putrajaya up on the bridge; parked along the many highways of Putrajaya; all along the main roads of the city and await the fireworks to herald in the country's fiftieth birthday, unconcern that the fireworks competition that had been starting promptly at 10pm for the whole week is suddenly late and "speculations' and "rumour" as to the actual time started circulating, that it could be starting at 12 midnite after all.

Most just took it in stride and seem almost unnaturally nonchalant and graceful about this little "delay". Just patiently waiting , chatting and rebonding with family members, catching up with old friends whom they bumped into all with the same patriotic purpose...just to celebrate the nation's 50th birthday... ahh...ever true the Malaysian spirit ... check out www.YouTube.com for some videos of the fireworks...

I feel proud of visionaries in the grand ole days like Tunku Abdul Rahman and all those who worked alongside him to fight for our country's independence and in a certain way...I hope that I and my generation have not let them down in anyway...and that all that he fought and hoped for this country is in a way , coming to fruition even though it may have taken a slightly different route from the one that he had envisioned or planned!

For a noble man who dared to take the road less travelled....may we all have the same courage to do what is right for greater good!

The New Seed Cafe

Okay, before we all go and celebrate Malaysia's 50th Independence...some of y'all will be travelling and others will be relaxing at home..if you are in Kuala Lumpur, pop into Midvalley Megamall for the latest Seed cafe... no they don't serve organic food...just good food with a slight twist.
But if there is one thing that really sets this restaurant apart would be the homemade Cempedak and Durian ice cream, delivered daily at RM5.90 and RM6.90 a scoop and I hear that is handmade by the boss lady herself. It is some "kick ass" ice cream...rich creamy and real , very fruity and meaty ...

Everything here is served with a little twist, for instance their pasta with salted fish in the sauce, salad in a bowl, or their own version of dried rice noodle , which is really like a DIY "chee cheong fun" ... to name a few delights...decor is also cool and quite chic! Small and cosy...great for a get together with friends...
Oh-oh , don't forget , you gotta try the refreshing crushed mint with ginger soda for drinks...delicious!

Frogway -The Musical (My views)

Been meaning to write y'all about the re-premiering of this brilliant musical written by Michael Veerapen and Marcel Nunis , one a leading jazz musician in this region, the other a Malaysian residing and working in the USA as the Artistic Director of Theatre J'Nerique in USA, the program didn't mention which part of USA, sorry...

Anyway, this is a brilliant musical of original scores written by this two gentlemen circa 1980
, first play staged July 30, 1980 and subsequently several other times including even in California. It has played to sold out audiences before and last Friday night was no different.

Long story , cut very short , this is a story a talented an ambitious frog who wanted to sing (think "Little Mermaid") but was ridiculed by an overprotective father , left home to search himself and do what he believes in , met some bad people...was successful and his own vanity and naivette nearly cost him his life and that is dear to him, and home to rescue a dying , his dying pond.

I thought the music and songs were very good...the singing by lead actor Vince (winner of Akademi Fantasia 2003) as Freddie ambitious bullfrog was good , somehow he fitted very well with the role. My friend thinks he should lose some weight , (never mind the relevance here)...but come to think of it.. .maybe bigger he seems more "bullfroggish" compared to a common toad...

The play somehow came across as amateurish acting, but with some brilliant spots like when Chelsia Ng, who plays the role of Shirley The Frogette , with a very Japanese accent....described the rat race to romantic interest, Freddy the Toad(Ash Nair)....her screeching brought thunderous applause from the audience. Her naivette, accent and silly big-eyed, giggly Japanese doll yet somehow sensible is very endearing and kinda you know, stole the show!

The lead female vocalist is Ina Fabregas (Helen the Fish), love interest of Freddie , the prodigal son and small pond bullfrog made good in "Frogway" aka Hollywood. Her melodic voice led most of the songs . Although she was a bit off tune in the beginning song but really minor in view of the bigger scheme of things. Her sister Marielle , only 14years old gave an amazing performance as well as one of the three Frogettes.

Then there is of course the role of the scheming and "Smiley" snake and Suzannah "silly" stork played by Harith Iskandar and Elaine Daly respectively... something very liberating about playing a dumb bird and just showing peek-a-boo feathered butt, I think. Thor Kah Hoong as Horatio was unfortunately a little pallid compared to the rest of the cast, but then he is submerged in his own little world of the small pond...
Ash Nair (Malaysian Idol 2 finalist) also gave a very good solo singing performance ...

This show is really a showcase of singing talents with some strong support in acting by veteran actors and actresses like Thor, Elaine, Harith and Chelsia.

But, it is an enjoyable play, and if you aren't going away for this long weekend , definitely worth spending a couple of hours to hear some witty and funny dialogue. Sure sometimes they are a little off key, sure even the lead actor gets confused after one too many "drinks" and mistakens the "pick me up" sunflower seeds and the more dastardly (I believe) "pumpkin seeds"don't want to give away the plot here.. but all minor details really... still great for a good laugh!Check out www.theactorsstudio.com.my

Miss Saigon

Miss Saigon is a musical set in the 1975 during the American occupation in Saigon, Vietnam. It centers around the relationship between Kim, a Vietnamese woman, and Chris, an American GI. Many years upon the departure of the American soldiers from Vietnam, Chris, thinking that Kim was dead, married Ellen. However, he was later informed that Kim did not die and has a son: his son. And so he travelled to Bangkok, where Kim fled to, to go on a search for the both of them. Before Chris could find Kim, she found his wife first and was devastated that he is married. Now, as for the ending, you will have to watch it when you get a chance.

Honestly, i don't really think that this musical is superb in terms of its content because it is after all, another love story (maybe with a little twist). But what i love about Miss Saigon is the songs. Some of the songs were sung so beautifully that it just touches me. And yes, i cried. Also, the props used were fantastic and if you're wondering why the brush strokes on the poster advertisement for this musical resembles that of a helicopter, then you have another reason to go for the musical to find out for yourself.

I heard that Miss Saigon came to Malaysia but i guess it was long ago because i cannot remember anything about it in Malaysia at all but if it does head over to our shores for a tour in the future, give it a go.

P.S - Some of the American GIs have fantastic bodies! Haha...and oh, 'The Engineer' will crack you up!

The New Jeans

Well, as you have probably guessed...I am a fan of Dorothy Perkins , pants and jeans and yes, also on the fuller side of skinny in the bums and thighs department. So heaven sent is this new look for jeans which is a wideleg flare jeans. Very 70s and early 80s. Retailing at RM163 at all DP boutiques...A little high waisted so it is advisable to wear it really long( but not trip casualty long), and wear over your platforms to create that endless leg appearance. It is also flattering if you should have ever so slight a tummy , cause high cut just pulls in the tummy and in this instance the side buttons further breaks up the expanse of the width across and distract with the detailing. Check it out before it is sold out!

The New Length

Well, you may recalled in our Autumn Winter 2007 that we have mentioned pants are all taking on new lengths and shapes...well skinny is still in fr the summer, wear with a tight tee and fitted bolero or waistcoat. But definitely a more flattering style will be the crop pants, wear 'em fitted or flared. The right length is just below the knees or just above your calves. They are definitely more suited to an office environment than last season's shorts . Check out two cool buys (about RM123 per pair) from Dorothy Perkins (Midvalley Mall).Play with fabrication and colors, black is still chic, but plaid, checkered or even pinstripe is fun!

Pair them with short boxy jackets (also very in this season) or just wear them with a smart fitted shirt.
Always remember to wear them with slight heels for a more heightened appearance.

For casual, team it with tight baby tees and for evenings , a ruffled shirt or a metallic colored tube. That's what I call making a statement without overstating yourself....

Anne Weerapass-Alexis Great Eastern Mall

Saw Anne Weerapass performance at Alexis bar and Bistro at Great Eastern Mall last weekend. One talented dynamite of a singer. Accompanying her was Michael Veerapen on piano, Lewis Pragasam (drums , what else) and Kenny Loh (of Puchong oe was it Kepong, dude with long hair and moustache) on guitar and an unknown Mat Salleh , I think from Down Under.

She was really cool and accommodating...did a lot requests! Well worth paying a visit to Alexis to her her sing this weekend! Her repertoire is quite wide and her voice powerful in raspy sort of way!

In our sweltering hot weather, at times we can't help but wish that we could either step out in a cute bikini or have our clothes come with ventilation holes everywhere.

Well, the former isn't that good an idea since it would attract the kind of attention you wouldn't call for, but guess what? Our clothes do come with those "ventilation holes"! It's called "eyelet", and it's getting more and more popular these days.

Eyelet offers a look that is fresh, young and versatile. It is such a subtle detail, which is good for those who are not crazy over prints or bright colours and yet do not want their clothes to be too plain. Tunku, the Musical (Opening Night)

Opening night for this long awaited musical was last Saturday nite (11th August 2007) at KLPac and the only reason I , took a whole week to write about it is , not my usual procrastination but because I was genuinely busy (3 days) , genuinely sick (2 days) and now here I am , so I'm missing one day, who's counting...

Anyway, enough about me...this is a gem of a local musical. I can't even begin to tell you how proud I am to be Malaysian after watching it and how proud I am with this whole production. From the script, to the stage presentation and the stellar cast of outstanding talents that performed , directed , choreographed it, designers, very daring too, it even had a symbolic "rape scene"...my God...this is how far we have come in 50 years!

I have been to a few international plays in my time and I must say that this play didn't fall short of anything except perhaps more audiences. The writers of this play are two 28 years old boys, Lim Chuan Yik and Teng Ky-Gan. These two are some awesome talents! I missed Broken Bridges , their first collaboration but if Tunku is anything to go by, I must have missed something really good.

The storyline of Tunku is part fiction and part factual. It unfolds in such a way that you see bravery and true love and yet you can still feel pity for the villain (played by Tony Eusoffe).. The story unfolds after 1957...it isn't a story about Tunku Abdul Rahman but rather all that he stood and fought for and all that he believed in when fought for Malaya's independence and today's Malaysia . It is a play about the forces of ambitions that has made Malaysia what it is today(expulsion of Singapore 1969, bloody riots of May 1969) .

It is a play that celebrates what Malaysia really is. A country where we should "all be blind, colour blind" as the lyrics of finale song goes. It is a play that depicts what Malaya was really like in the 195O's and 1960's . People of all races dancing, living , working together in their national costumes. Most poignant for me are all the pictures of bygone era that was flashed across the backdrop as giant black and white TV screens . Pictures of Tunku, in national costume with fist raised to shout "Merdeka" (seven times, not three) , pictures of Tunku dancing the "joget" with other Indian, Malay and Chinese counterparts. Those were surely the days of democracy and freedom of expression with dignity and total reassurance of moral intact.

Those were the days, where Malay and Chinese lived and ate together, the immersion so close that it is confusing who started what or when first, as depicted in the song "Laksa" . If you think about it, is "Laksa" a Malay or a Chinese dish and how did it come about? More importantly should it matter?

Naturally a story about any country's history cannot avoid the reality and political manipulations that goes on . This is seen in the role of the racist and politically ambitious Syed, "aide" to the Tunku, who wanted to see the races rife for what he thinks should be the right "Malaya" . But like all villains or heroes, they all believed in the "truth" and "the right" that they fight for, rightly or wrongly and in the end paid the price. This play also showed the role of the Press and the consequences and the power they wield and true responsible reporting of events versus sensationalism.

But enough of the heavy stuff, was it , entertaining.... a resounding YES!! Was it educational , Yes!! education is after all what you choose to learn from anything...
I ask every Malaysian born before and after , especially after to go watch it and truly appreciate how hard won was our independence!

Lastly I have to say , the videography was brilliantly done. My God , Doreen ,what an angelic voice and and it was remiss of the organizers to have overlooked your bouquet of flowers! Fatima, you sizzle as the sultry mistress of a glamorous elegant era ...oops not letting the cat out the bag here! But then again the whole cast f 53 members from 5 months old to ...ended the night on a standing ovation, something that nice "shy" Malaysians are rather stingy with except for exceptional performances , guess that says it all huh!Joe Hasham and Faridah Merican and all sponsors like the STAR, thank you for your foresight!

Yes, i am a HUGE Backstreet Boys fan dating back to my primary school days! And just when i thought that they are officially done for good what with the members' solo albums and Kevin's decision to leave the group, i was surprised with the news that the boys (or should i say men?) will be back with a new album on October 30th: the same date they chose to release their Chapter One: Greatest Hits albums few years back.

How To Apply Make-up Step by Step, (The Clinique Way!)

Well, this writer, attended a step-by step , hands on, how to apply makeup session organized by Le Meridien for its Star Members at Le Meridien over the weekend. The session was conducted by the very affable Mr Alex Tan , event organiser for Clinique brand of cosmetics and skin care.

We missed the skin care part which consists of 3 steps.Which is cleanse, clarify and tone and moisturize session. Alex, gave some really interesting tips about make-up. He strongly encourages usage of foundation and sunblock to protect the skin. Learn to identify if you are a warm colour (yellow skin and darker tone skin) or colour tone (white and pink tone skin). Choice of make up colours should go by this rule,warm tone skins, very safely go for earth tones and greys, brown skin and darker tones, play with dark shades of any colour. Cold tones go for light blues, greens , yellow and even purple. Green is a good colour to brighten up any face.

Step one:
1) Apply foundation , always choose a foundation colour that matches skin tone. Best way to see if it matches is to try on foundation on cheek and see if it matches neck colour after application. This is very important as you don't want to be seen like wearing a mask if contrast is too big.
Always apply with a brush for a more even and smoother finish. Less is always more as far a foundation is concerned , so squeeze a little out on to hand and apply from the hand. Alex, also believe that foundation should make one look glowing , so choose a foundation with a little more emollient for that glowing look. Foundation according to Alex also acts as a protection for skin and these days , with all the technology thrown in to the make up formulas, fearing that foundation will clog pores should be a thing of the past!

2) Don't go for the dab 5 spot and even it out technique as you don't want to end up with dried foundation marks. Instead, apply part by part of face ie, start with the forehead, then the cheeks the nose, and then the chin. Never on the neck as you don't want to stain your collars.

Any concealer should be used after the foundation is applied so that it can be blended in and also you know how much you need to conceal still.

3) Next, draw the eyebrows. Use a brow pencil and draw from the inside to the outside of brows with flicking motions. Thickness of eyebrow should not be thicker than half your pinky's width.
The length should not be more than the length of eye. Think Marilyn Monroe!

4) Apply eye colour. Choose your colours according to skin tone. Always use only 1 highlighter colour and 1 tone colour. For day wear use the medium highlight and dab it all over eyelid up to brows. The use the darker shade and smooth on from the inside of eye to outer eye and the point nearest to eye. You can also pull up colour to give a slight slant of colour to eye. The use of the darker shade over the highlighter gives a more blended look to the colour appearance on lid.

*You can use the lighter highlight for a more dramatic contrast to eye colour and also if you have fairer skin , you can use the light highlight for day.

5) Draw eyeliner on top and bottom lid. Best to warm and soften liner first with fingers and so that the liner will soften a little and blend in to eyeshadow. Draw as close to eyelashes as possible and should drag up a little to give sexy slant to eyes especially round eyes. For the bottom lid, apply only one third of length of eye, and draw it inside out!

6) Apply mascara by drawing from bottom of lashes ands curl it upwards. Only apply colour under the lashes with long strokes and hold it at the tip for a moment to curl lashes. Do a zigzag motion for a fuller lash look and also to avoid a spider web look. If using lash curlers, it must be done before applying the mascara. Use several layers for maximum effect.

7) The trick to good blushing is to start by first smiling at yourself in the mirror. Hold the smile and identify the apple of the cheek. The blusher should start from the "apple" towards hairline near ear. By smiling, the blusher is located such that it looks like it is framing the smile , (so no more suck in the cheeks technique ladies:). Use a blusher brush and with circular moves sweep outwards and upwards towards upper middle of earlobe. Use warm shades like orange, browns and maroon , for colours use the lighter shades like reds.
Any leftover blusher can be lightly dab onto chin and forehead , very , very lightly!

8) Apply lip colour. Use your fingers and dab colour onto lips, then pat over with lip gloss. Keep lips slightly open but not pursed for a more natural look. For evening, you can choose to use a lip liner. Just make sure that you first apply lip liner, and colour inside of lips with the liner then do the lipstick and lip gloss procedure. This is to ensure that when lip colour wears off you are not left with a harsh outline of your lip liner which tends to stay on longer!

9) Last but not least dab loose powder onto face. The reason is so that all the make up looks more blended in and not appear as spots of colour on your face. Always use face brush. Dust off the excess powder and then gently dust all over face. Final touch up can then be done if colour is insufficient ie on the cheeks . You can now dust some powder on to the neck , if you wish!

The Rage of the Skinnies!

Alright, here's the deal, I do not understand the Skinny Jeans rage nor I think will I ever get it.

To be fair, I am one of the spiteful female species who are cursed with thunder thighs and calves the size of an elephant's leg. So when I first heard that skinny jeans were the "in thing", I smirked and thought to myself, "Oh, the horrors of the carrot cut jeans are back! Oh well, people will get over it soon, like a really bad horror flick." But noooooo, EVERYONE is worshiping em' skinnies like it actually flatters the lower region. The waif-ish looking models look good in them, fair enough because well, they're models and they are supposed to look good in anything. But what really got me was when EVERYONE wanted to get a pair of skinnies, even them with thunder thighs like me!

You see the thing is, skinnies are not for everyone. It doesn't flatter you like a boot-cut does, because boot-cut jeans are the best cut. Not skinnies!

Let's compare.

The skinny jeans obviously makes your hips look larger, which in my opinion is a no-no unless you're in ancient China trying to impress your mother-in-law with your baby bearing potential. The boot-cut jeans however balances the upper portion of the lower region to the lower portion with a slight flare at the bottom of the jeans, which magically creates an optical illusion to slimmer legs. Yay! Also the skinny makes you look short and the boot-cut gives you proportion. Your pick.

BUT.

I understand that women being women can't help but follow the trends set by fashion starters because we women are strange beings and we cannot help conforming a little because everyone's wearing it! Oh, the sin not to own something so hot in fashion! I get it, okay?

So, if you must, if you must defy the laws of "wearing something that suits your body type", if you must get a pair because of some inexplicable irrational feeling, you think you might actually look good in a shrink wrap in disguise as a pair of jeans, then so be it.

However I do think that a wiser choice would be getting a pair of straight-cuts because they are the lesser evil compared to the skinny (they are less tapered at the bottom).

Now let me bless you with the do's and don't's when wearing a pair of Skinny Jeans.

Thou shalt wear them in only dark blue washes or black.

Thy jeans shall be made of stiffer denim and not a whole lot of spandex or lycra.

Thou shalt not pair them with flip flops.

Thou shalt pair them with ballet flats only if thou has long legs/tall.

Thou shalt pair em' jeans with a top that creates volume to balance the bottom and also length to cover thy hips.

Autumn Winter 2007 -Off the Runway

emmagem.com took a look at Autumn Winter 2007 looks and this season's look, looks set to bring out the best winter ever.Below are some of the key looks (Part One) for this coming holiday season. I have always been a winter person deep down inside although born and bred in the sunny climes of Malaysia ...and that's the best thing ever cos' I get to wear all my winter colors all year round with some minor adaptation with regards to the material lest I wilt away in a plush woolen mink coat (err...faux mink, I mean) .

AW 2007 on the haute couture runway:
1) go for hourglass- time to show off your curves ladies...cinched in the waist with a slim belt for a feminine appeal or a thick belt to accentuate waist or a corset belt like those seen on Dolce and Gabbana for those who dare.

2) The new length- last season was all about the maxi lengths, but for AW they hitched it up little, most popular length is slightly below knee or mid calf. Best worn with heels.
Trousers are cropped below knee but long or short, they are all loose and baggy , last season's drainpipes are definitely down the drain (manner of speech) think Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart instead. Sure hides a multitude of sins, just make sure you heel up, so as not too look like the bag lady:)

3) Black on black- wear your black, the most flattering color ...and wear it as imaginatively as possible. Mix your fabrics, wear black on black ie velvet and shimmer/metallic mesh. Play up lace and leather or silk with leather. Toy with texture, mix glittery crystals and sequins embellishment on black and wear it boldly.

5) The smart skirt suit look is still very in but tone down to a more casual stance , mixing boxy jackets with dirndl skirts, circle skirts, pencil skirts . Jackets are fitted , some are flared and its all about the different approach to a usually straight laced formal outfit, making it more stylish and approachable. The boardroom won't be the same anymore.

6) Yes, with all the war going on , the militant look is I suppose inevitable albeit with a touch of fun and casual air to the grimmer reality. Big brass buttons, epaulets , boots ...just get creative and bring it out to the light.

I am not the type of girl you would call slim so buying a pair of jeans can be a pain in the behind. Sometimes, i see a pair i really like but unfortunately, they don't have it in my size. Or, it fits nicely at first only to be stuck at the thigh-area because my thighs are too big. And it is because of these reasons that i hate shopping for jeans at times.

Luckily, i discovered Dorothy Perkins! Although the jeans can be a lil pricey, it is worth every ringgit i spent. Not only does DP cater to bigger sizes, their jeans are just amazing! I love how they make me look, how they make me feel! And the thing is, they last much longer than many of the jeans that i've got. Unlike those, my DP jeans don't get loose after being worn for many times and are still in an awesome condition.

So the next time if you've got problems looking for jeans, try Dorothy Perkins (Mid Valley, One Utama, KLCC). I don't guarantee 100% satisfaction but hey, it works for me so it might work for you too! =)

Just read in Yahoo! news today ,a research by the University of Texas , the motivation for men and women to have sex is apparently not all that different...it usually stems from just wanting to enjoy sex and especially because of an attraction to the other person. Although the research did qualify that the study is conducted among college students with raging hormones which could explain the findings and that it could differ from a study of a slightly higher and more"mature" age group. Interesting that they came up with 237 reasons why people have sex, talk about intellectualizing sex...and no, we are not encouraging sex but it sure does make for an interesting coffee time read... Menopause the Musical

Hi, all, if you glam lot still have not watched "Menopause The Musical", make sure you try and catch it before it ends its run at Bangsar Shopping Complex on the 5th August 2007. I know, we are all way, wa-aay too young to experience this very natural and yet very imminent female phenomenon but there are loads of people we care about in our daily lives who do "suffer" through this...I say, suffer because , there are the mood swings and then there are the hot flashes, memory loss, chocolate binges not enough sex, too much sex.....! And then there are the people who suffer the side effects of their suffering...so bring your mum , dad, your aunt and uncle , cousins , nephews , nieces etc , etc and hear it out in the open and have it sung out loud and have a really good laugh about it...and we will all realize that in ain't so bad after all ... like one young audience said, "almost makes you look forward to menopause".

Some really great music (all 28 great tracks ) like "I heard it through the grapevine, you''ll no longer see 39, Staying Awake to the tune of Stayin' Alive , and then there is the brave cast of women in their fifties, singing out loud the blues...absolutely hilarious!

Don't Feed Them These

Many people out there (including some uncredible vets) think that dogs can eat anything. Well, it is not true. Below is a list that i thought i'd share with you, of the food that dogs should not eat:

Garlic
Onion
Macadamia Nuts
Grapes
Fruit Seeds (Eg: Apple and pear seeds are poisoinous to dogs)
Chocolate
Broccoli
Bones (The sharp shards could tear a dog's organ)

Though the food are harmless to us, they are in fact, dangerous too dogs, especially when consumed in large portion. For example, onions and garlic contain toxic that kill dogs' red blood cells, causing them to vomit, suffer from diarrhea or discharge red urine.

If you love your dog, then be careful with what you feed it. Remember, their body system is not like ours.

The coolest patiserie at Heritage Row

On 20th July 2007, Asian Heritage Row claimed another winner when Bisou (meaning kisses in francais ) a patisserie opened for business...such cool decor theme all in white just like sister restaurants (Bijou and Bianco).

All kinds of pastries like cupcakes, brownies, bagels , the best brioche in town (personal opinion) and the only place I know anyway in KL, that sells fresh hot cross buns. All pastries are freshly made daily.

Bisou opens from 7am till 2am for you hungry clubbers...after you have had your fill of drinking ;you can go to sober up there with fresh brewed coffees and some deeelicious cakes. Be a responsible citizen :)
