Aye for eyelet

In our sweltering hot weather, at times we can't help but wish that we could either step out in a cute bikini or have our clothes come with ventilation holes everywhere.

Well, the former isn't that good an idea since it would attract the kind of attention you wouldn't call for, but guess what? Our clothes do come with those "ventilation holes"! It's called "eyelet", and it's getting more and more popular these days.

Eyelet comes on mainly tops and dresses, but now designers have gone even more creative by adding this cute detail to even bags!

This gorgeous white eyelet dress makes the BCBG Max Azria model look fresh, pure and young. But for the lot of us who can't afford to waltz into BCBG stores and saunter out with shopping bags in hand, fret not, for we do have cheaper alternatives.

This mint green eyelet spaghetti strap top from Roxy carries a subtle hint of sexiness, yet at the same time is demure enough to not look trashy.

Who says the peek-a-boo always has to be at the hem? This top from Gossips is simple but not boring with the playful cut-out middle. Oh, and the necklace with the rabbit charm is just adorable too ;)

Sweet and sassy is the way to go, with this baby blue eyelet hem skirt from Gap . Pair it with simple sandels and you're all set to dazzle.

I absolutely adore this eyelet cropped jacket from Forever 21. It's chic, trendy and versatile.

Embroidery flowers plus cut-out details at the hem? Let us hear your squeal of delight. Also from Forever 21.

This was what we were talking about when we said designers are getting creative. The show-off details at the edge of the bag will make your carry-all stand out, so go get one from Roxy.

Eyelet offers a look that is fresh, young and versatile. It is such a subtle detail, which is good for those who are not crazy over prints or bright colours and yet do not want their clothes to be too plain. With so many good points on its side, it's hard to make a fashion faux pas with this peek-a-boo detail, because anything goes!

However, to be on the safe side, here are a few general tips to avoiding a fashion no-no.

As with any other trend, do not wear eyelet from head to toe. If you already have on an eyelet top, forget the eyelet skirt. If you are donning an eyelet dress already, reach for the cotton tote instead of the eyelet one.

Stick to simple and solid accessories, or else you risk being overwhelmed by your clothes and have others noticing your outfit and not you.

Don't flash too much! Although we did say it adds a hint of sexiness, we did not mean for it to be sleazy sexy. So if your top plays too much peek-a-boo, you'll be getting some boos too. Make sure you're not exposing too much, be it skin or your neon pink lingerie. If you think you look more trashy than trendy, layer your eyelet garment over something else.
